The Process

An epoxy table is not a weekend. It's a string of irreversible choices with a lot of waiting in between. Here's how I actually build one. Tools and brand names change. The order of operations doesn't, much.

Choosing the slab

I start with wood that has a face worth keeping: live edge, natural splits, figure, spalt, a void that already looks like a river. Thickness matters. Too thin and the top flexes. Too thick and you mill for days.

Moisture matters more. If the slab is still wet, it will move after the resin has locked the shape. I want stock that's been dried properly and then sat in the shop long enough to settle.

Walnut under oil looks warm and forgives small sins. Maple with strong figure can look incredible and shows every scratch if you botch the finish. I buy from real yards, not mystery piles. Epoxy freezes whatever you pour it into. Bad wood stays bad, permanently.

At this point I also decide what the piece is for. Dining, coffee, desk. That sets length, width, height, how wild the edge can stay, and what kind of base will hold it.

Design before the saw

I look at the slab for a while. Where's the grain strongest? Where are the voids? Will two live edges face each other for a natural river, or do I need to cut a channel, or is this a "fill the cracks and leave it honest" top?

Color gets test cups. Opaque black. Translucent blue. Mica that either shimmers or turns to sludge. I check samples on a scrap of the same wood under shop light and under warmer house light. Resin shifts as it cures. What you mixed at noon is not exactly what you sand next week.

I pick the base early. Pretty pour, weak legs: still a failure.

Flattening

"Mostly flat" means a glass that rocks and a river that reflects like a funhouse.

Big slabs don't run through a normal jointer end to end. I use a router sled on a rigid bed or another slab-flattening setup and work the faces until the top is true and thickness is even. Dust everywhere. No shortcuts. Twist left in the wood will fight you through the pour and every grit after.

Then I clean. Dust in clear epoxy is a permanent constellation.

Seal the wood

If two halves make the river, I fix the gap width so nothing creeps when the form goes on. Loose bark and fiber come off the edges that will meet resin. Otherwise they float up mid-pour and you get floaters in the glass.

Raw wood is full of air. Pour deep epoxy against unsealed end grain and bubbles stream for hours. I brush or pour a thin sealing coat on every surface that will touch the main pour, let it kick, then scrape or sand as needed. Highlight reels skip this. I don't.

The form

Epoxy runs into every gap. The mold has to be level, stiff, and sealed.

I dam the pour with melamine or plastic-lined plywood, joints sealed with caulk, tape, or hot glue depending on the shape. Clamps and screws so the wood can't float. The whole thing sits on a surface I trust for level. A half-degree of tilt becomes a wedge of resin you'll sand until you hate yourself.

Release is planned before the pour: tape, wax, plastic on anything that shouldn't become one with the table. Stuck demolds are a particular misery.

Mixing

Deep pours need pour-rated epoxy. Thin coating resin in a two-inch river overheats, yellows, or cracks. I mix by weight at the ratio on the jug. Not by eye. Not "about equal."

Slow mix. Scrape the sides and bottom. Color goes in after the base is uniform. A short rest if the product allows, so some bubbles rise in the cup instead of in the river.

Volume is length × average width × depth, plus a cushion. Running dry mid-pour is catastrophic. Mixing a double batch "just in case" and then dumping it all at once can cook the pour. Both mistakes are expensive.

Pouring

This is the line you don't undraw.

I pour in layers when the depth requires it, each layer inside the product's max thickness, waiting for the right stage of cure before the next so the layers still bond. Heat gun or torch on the surface to pop bubbles, carefully. Too much heat scorches resin or stirs currents that wreck a clean color field.

If I'm doing metallics or layered color, I place cups and stop early. Overworking almost always looks worse than a simple pour you leave alone.

Then I wait. Shop temperature and pour mass set the clock. Fingerprints in half-cured epoxy are forever. Dust cover on. Door closed.

Out of the form, flat again

When the resin is hard enough to machine, the form comes off. Residue cleaned. Edges cleaned.

Almost always I flatten again. Wood and epoxy don't shrink the same. What looked level in the mold needs another pass so river and timber share one plane. Final thickness gets set here. Outer edges get squared, eased, or cleaned along the live edge so nothing snags a sleeve.

Base

Hardware that can be serviced later when I can manage it. Stability against racking. Balance with the top's mass. Levelers if the floor will be cruel. For shipping: can the base come off?

Wood bases get finished like the top. Metal gets clean hardware and a finish that won't stain the underside.

Sanding

This is most of the hours. Coarse grits kill mill marks and epoxy high spots. Fine grits make the river polish instead of scratch. Linger on soft resin and you dish it. Jump grits on wood and you leave scratches that only appear when finish hits them under dinner light.

Vacuum. Wipe. Raking light. Underside and edges too. People touch the edge when they walk by.

Finish

Depends on use.

Hard wax oil and penetrating oils feel like wood, repair easily, and need coasters and a little care. Film finishes take more abuse at a dining table. A thin clear epoxy flood coat gives a glass top: tough, different look, different repair story.

Coats on a schedule. Matte, satin, or gloss on purpose. I want a surface you put a hand on without thinking, not one that only works under a phone flash.

Check, care notes, crate

I check flatness, finish, base attachment, defects under good light. You get care notes: cleaners, heat, moisture, how to refresh oil years out.

Then the crate. Support the top. Protect corners and live edge. Survive the truck. A perfect table destroyed in transit is still a failed job.

If you're commissioning one

Bring dimensions, how you'll use it, wood or color preferences if you have them. Expect calendar time. Cures don't care about your party date. I'll fix small mistakes in the shop; I won't force a pour when the chemistry or the wood isn't ready.

The goal is simple enough: a slab that looks like it always belonged in your room, with a river (or fill) that doesn't look glued on as an afterthought.
